Many people worldwide celebrate the occasion. The date marks the military anniversary of the Battle of Puebla in 1862 when Mexican forces defeated French troops at a site southeast of Mexico City. The victory at Puebla increased momentum for Mexican resistance to foreign domination as Mexico continued its fight to eventually gain independence.
