Cinco de Mayo is a major holiday in Mexico traditionally observed on May 5. Many people worldwide celebrate the occasion. The date marks the military anniversary of the Battle of Puebla in 1862 when Mexican forces defeated French troops at a site southeast of Mexico City. The victory at Puebla increased momentum for Mexican resistance to foreign domination as Mexico continued its fight to eventually gain independence.
