The Old City Cemetery Center, located in the Mitte Cultural District, is pleased to present the 1st Saturday Coffee and Culture Series each first Saturday of the month from 10 am to noon on Saturday, October 3, 2009. The series includes a presentation and a cup of coffee. October's Coffee and Culture series includes a presentation on "Freedman's Cemetery: Archeology and Historic Burial Relocation" by Rolando Garza, Archeologist, Palo Alto Battlefield NHS. In honor of Texas Archeology Month in October, Mr. Garza will explain how archeologists use cemeteries as a research tool. After the presentation, guests will enjoy a guided walking tour of the Old City Cemetery with Rolando Garza and Old City Cemetery Center Programs Coordinator Rhiannon Cizon. The walking tour will point out areas of interest to archeologists. This community project initiative is funded in part through the Historic City Cemetery Project funded by the Brownsville Community Improvement Corporation and the City of Brownsville. Guests to the cemetery center will also enjoy the temporary exhibition Nuestra Vida Humilde: Our Humble Way of Life exhibit by Joe Lopez. The exhibit is on display through October 9.
