Businesses attend regional conference on disaster preparedness Is your business prepared for a disaster? Small business owners, who recognize the necessity of a business continuity or emergency preparedness plan, will gain practical knowledge from the business track of the B-HIT or B-Prepared Economic Development and Emergency Management Conference at the South Padre Island Convention Centre from April 20 through April 22. Hosted by the Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council (LRGVDC) and the UTPA Small Business Development Center (SBDC), the B-HIT or B-Prepared business track covers public resources, insurance needs, and employee protection, as well as credit issues, identity risks, and scams during disasters, among others. ''Business continuity, an integral facet of a strategic plan for a business, requires the attention of even the smallest business enterprise. A business typically provides the principle livelihood for the business owner. When a disaster interrupts operations, however, the ripple effect can be devastating to the owner, its employees, and the community. The business track for this conference offers small business owners access to invaluable resources - contacts, information, and tools , to get back to business as quickly as possible after a disaster,'' share Maria Juarez Serna, Director for the Small Business Development Center. According to Terrie G. Salinas, LRGVDC Program Director for Economic Development and lead for the event, the main impetus for this event is to help build ''disaster-resilient communities''. ''This conference is for everybody! It will provide information and educational training on how to deal with man-made and natural disasters at all levels: business, community leaders, and volunteers. We have experienced speakers addressing all of these areas to help our region. This conference is the first of its kind to support both economic development and emergency management service providers,'' added
