Join in the fun as Harlingen celebrates its 100th birthday in 2010! The Harlingen Centennial Celebration Committee is holding a community meeting on Wednesday, September 9th, at 5:30 p.m. at the Harlingen Public Library to get more citizens involved in this citywide celebration. The meeting is free and open to the public. Service clubs, church groups, neighborhood associations, school groups, businesses, and others are invited to attend the meeting on September 9th and learn how they can get involved with planning and organizing Centennial events. Volunteers are need to help with a wide range of proposed activities, including parades, concerts, dances, sports events, storytelling, art displays, and more. Centennial events will begin as early as November 2009, when the commemorative book, At the Crossroads: Harlingen's First 100 Years, goes on sale and will culminate the week of April 15, 2010, which is the 100th anniversary of Harlingen's incorporation. Organizers of other activities in Harlingen in 2010 also are encouraged to use the Centennial theme.
