October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Casa de Proyecto Libertad is hosting a luncheon in honor of immigrant women survivors of domestic violence, to raise awareness about domestic abuse and to raise funds for our work. Three clients of Proyecto Libertad will share their experiences as survivors of domestic violence. The event will also feature speakers from the three Domestic Violence programs in the Rio Grande Valley, Friendship of Women in Brownsville, Texas, Family Crisis Center in Harlingen, Texas and Mujeres Unidas in McAllen, Texas. There will be a musical performance by Rumbo Al Anacua (Joe and Rosa Perez), and a poetry reading by Brenda Riojas Nettles from her recent book of poems, ''La Primer Voz Que Oi''. The luncheon is catered by the City Coffee Shop of Harlingen, Texas Casa de Proyecto Libertad is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that promotes and defends human rights in the Rio Grande Valley through immigration legal services, advocacy and community organizing. Many of our clients are survivors of domestic violence.
