''Amigoland'', the first novel written by Texas Southmost College alumnus Oscar Casares, is set in the border city of Brownsville and involves a family dispute between two elderly brothers. Don Fidencio is 91 years old and a resident of Amigoland, the fictional nursing home from which he is continually plotting his escape. The younger brother, Don Celestino, is recently widowed and romatically involved with his housekeeper Socorro, a woman more than 30 years his junior. After the brothers reconcile, they agree to travel to northern Mexico to solve the mystery at the heart of their dispute: the legend of how their grandfather was kidnapped and brought to the United States. As the unlikely trio heads south, they learn it's never too late for a new beginning. The campus will also host Casares in September as part of Hispanic Heritage Month.
